Phelps, NY-November 4, 2007

Phelps Chamber of Commerce names Phelps Mercantile as the November Business of the Month.

The former Agway located at 62 Ontario Street in Phelps was purchased in July of 2006 by John Uvegas and Jim Cheney and is now known as the Phelps Mercantile. The business is still an Agway dealer and remains the community’s hometown farm and garden store with many new additions. Specialty services include a dairy feed delivery service within a 40 mile radius, full tire service, glass repairs and screening, and video/DVD rentals. Phelps Mercantile has worked hard to provide the community with a wide variety of goods and services, truly operating as our “hometown general store”. Some of the items and services they provide include:

  • Water-in five gallon containers
  • Customized Vinyl signs
  • Schleich Toys
  • Water Softener salt
  • Home Appliances
  • Pet food, toys, and care items
  • Paint, brushes, and other supplies for home improvement
  • Grass seed and products for lawn care
  • Painted homemade crafts by Robin Uvegas

Employees at Phelps Mercantile have a true devotion to the community as all 15 are from the Phelps area. Jerry Vancamp recently celebrated 50 years of service at the Agway location. Phelps Mercantile is proud of Jerry’s accomplishments through the years. Jerry’s daughter Donna has also shown the same the commitment to the community with her 25 years of the service with this Agway branch. Phelps Mercantile has helped to sponsor many events and organizations in the community including the Phelps Community Center, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce, school programs, Girls Scouts, Boy Scouts, local animal shelters, and the House of John. Phelps Mercantile also helps to support local businesses by including a “Business of the Week” in their advertising to help feature a local business that have purchased their goods and services.

Phelps Mercantile was recently awarded the “Pass the Torch” honor at the Phelps Chamber’s Banquet of Thanks. Both John Uvegas and Jim Cheney have their children working with them in this business.
Stop in today to see all Phelps Mercantile has to offer. The store provides extended hours to help the community with their needs: Monday-Thursday 8am-7pm, Friday and Saturday 8am-8pm, and Sunday 10am-6pm.
The Phelps Chamber of Commerce wishes Phelps Mercantile continued success and a special thank you to Jerry Vancamp for his 50 years at our local hometown store.
