Every month, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce recognizes a member as our business of the month. This month we are pleased to recognize Frederick Farms.
Located on McBurney Road in Phelps, Frederick Farms is a second-generation family owned and operated dairy farm. First started in 1941, current owners, Jan and John Frederick took over from his parents in 2001. Jan and John love being a part of the Phelps community of farmers which allows them to highlight the importance of farming in Phelps. They represented this community at the Ontario County Fair where this past year their daughter, Jamie, won Reserve Grand Champion Holstein, and Master Showman of Goats, just to name a few of her accolades.
Even though its roots are in dairy, Frederick Farms has gained notoriety, locally and online, from their acres of sunflower fields. They have fielded phone calls as far as Hawaii wanting to know when they will run their annual hayrides through the sunflowers. This year alone they planted 30 acres and over 800,000 black oil sunflowers, a small downsize from last years 69 acres. Hayrides will be run over two weekends the 12-14 and 19-21st of August starting Friday, August 12th at 6:30 p.m. Rides will be held on Saturday and Sunday at 1, 2, and 6:30.
To learn more about the farm, please visit their Facebook page. You can find them listed as one of “The 15 Most Beautiful Places in Upstate New York You Didn’t Know Existed” on thrillist.com, as well as multiple pictures in a variety of publications.
If you want to come sneak an early peak of the sunflower fields and learn more about the Frederick Farms, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce will be hosting their business mixer this Tuesday, August 9, from 6:30-8 p.m.
