Every month throughout 2015, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce has recognized a woman owned business member as Business of the Month. To conclude this theme, the honor is given to a multi-generational business with deep roots in the Phelps community.
A horse riding stable that first started in 1961 by Bob & Jean Naukam, Terry Ho Stables was named after Jean’s first horse. A few years later, the business moved from Phelps to Buttonwood Farms on Outlet Rd. in Clifton Springs where it served as an Arabian farm while continuing to offer horse riding lessons.
In 1969, Terry Ho Stables returned to Wilber Rd. in Phelps where it continues to provide riding lessons and boarding.
When Bob & Jean retired in 1990, Terry Ho Stables was purchased by their daughter Sandy and her husband Mark. Their 2 young children (Mike and Jessie) grew up helping on the farm, and Jessie (now 27) continues to work as an instructor. Mike (26) is currently in the Navy.
Donna Phillips (Sandy’s sister) also works at Terry Ho Stables as the main riding instructor, and Mark manages all of the field work and maintenance.
There are many things that Sandy loves about owning Terry Ho Stables, including enjoying the sunrises early in the morning but working with horses is a lifestyle that is hard not to love. Her favorite thing about living and working in Phelps is the country life, and the small town environment.
The history of horses traces back several generations in Sandy’s family. Her mothers’ father owned work horses, and her fathers’ father trained the horses that pulled the fire engine in Buffalo, NY. Today, Terry Ho Stables provides housing to 23 horses and offers riding lessons to anyone interested… as young as 5 years old. They specialize in beginners and teaching people how to have fun while enjoying a horse.
Terry Ho Stables teaches a basic horsemanship lesson. The rider not only learns how to ride, but also to care for the horse before and after each ride. They teach English and Western riding, and if you don’t know the difference it is taught on your first lesson.
There are openings available for new students interested in riding or learning how to ride a horse. Classes are priced per hour (or half hour for youth ages 5-8 years old.) For more information about private or group riding lessons, please contact Terry Ho Stables at (315) 548-9051.
