Throughout 2015, the Phelps Chamber of Commerce is celebrating Women in Business in a variety of ways…
This year, Benemy Welding & Fabrication, Bright Beginnings Early Learning Center, and Country Corner are each being recognized as the Businesses of Distinction.
Benemy Welding & Fabrication, owned by Tina Suhr, is a NYS Certified Woman Owned Business providing precision Welding & Fabrication services for Commercial, Industrial, and Residential clients in and beyond the Finger Lakes Region since 1991.
Bright Beginnings, owned by Heather DeRuyter, is an educational childcare and preschool for ages 6 weeks to 5 years. Within the first few years, Bright Beginnings has grown substantially and has recently become a non-profit organization.
For the past 15 years the Country Corner, owned by Patti Bird, has been a gift store known for its custom candy and specializing collectibles (such as Boyd-Willow Tree). Patti’s mother Marilyn Bird has been the face of the store, taking a great interest in the Midlakes community.
In addition, Joanne Sullivan—owner of the Historic Phelps Hotel Restaurant– will also be recognized as the Person of Honor. Born and raised in Phelps, Joanne has raised 5 children of her own and supported them on their own business ventures as well as her husbands’ and happily took care of the financial aspect for her family. In 1977, Joanne and Fran purchased the Sullivan Block (Laundromat), and Joanne set up an office space where she maintained the books for Sullivan Electric (her son Stephen’s business), the Laundromat, The Village Restaurant, and eventually the Phelps Hotel.
The Village Restaurant (located where Community Bank in Phelps is currently located) was purchased in 1987, and after 2 ½ years of renovation it was opened as a restaurant in December of 1990. Three years later, the Phelps Hotel was purchased and the Village Restaurant was moved into the Phelps Hotel Restaurant where it has remained a staple business in the Phelps community.
Since the late 1970s, Joanne has been well known in Downtown Phelps. People would stop into her office to talk and she was always there to answer questions and help with anything from making change to finding a place to live.
