MOBILE METH LABS - DO YOU KNOW WHAT TO DO?
FROM THE NYS LTAP CENTER - CORNELL LOCAL ROADS PROGRAM
What is a Mobile Meth Lab?
A mobile meth lab, also known as a 'shake & bake' or 'one-pot' is a portable lab that creates small batches of methamphetamines (meth). They are extremely dangerous and can cause violent explosions. They are becoming more common in rural communities and are often mistaken as trash and found discarded in ditches/woods.
What if I find one?
DO NOT touch anything. Call 911 immediately and vacate the area.
DO NOT try to move or open the containers. The reaction can restart when the bottle is moved or shaken.
DO move upwind/uphill from the lab while waiting for help.
If accidentally touched/picked up, immediately wash (with soap & water) and notify the proper authority.
THINGS TO LOOK FOR:
- 2 liter soda/plastic bottles partially full with white/gray crystallized materials and (sometimes) tubing.
- Small food processor/blender
- Backpacks and totes
- Lithium battery strips/peeled batteries
- Cold medicine packets
- Lighter fluid/propane tank
- Household drain opener
- Rubber gloves/respirator masks
Public Works crews may encounter mobile meth labs when cleaning ditches or performing routine maintenance. Typically found in sealed bottles that appear to be under pressure (aka ready to explode.) Allow only trained and authorized personnel to handle items!
NOTE THE LOCATION, BACK AWAY, AND CALL 911 IMMEDIATELY!
