DEC Adopts Electronic Hunting Tags and Other Deer Hunting Enhancements

New York State hunters can now use electronic tags (e-tags) for deer, bear, and turkey through the HuntFishNY mobile app starting this fall. Hunters no longer need to attach a physical tag to the animal and can immediately report a harvest using the app, even without cell service, as it syncs automatically when connectivity is available. For hunters who prefer traditional methods, paper licenses and tags are still available, but paper tag users must now report their harvest within 48 hours.    How Electronic Tags Work    1. Download the App:  Obtain the HuntFishNY mobile app on your device. 2. Select Tag & Confirm Harvest:  Use the app to indicate the desired tag and answer a few questions to confirm your harvest. 3. No Physical Attachment Needed:  You do not need to attach a paper tag to the animal while it is in your possession, including in your vehicle or at your home. 4. Reporting & Synchronization:  Harvests are reported instantly via the app, even offline. The information automatically submits when cell service is available. 5. Required for Other Locations:  If you leave the carcass at a taxidermist or processor, you must affix a handmade tag with your name, ID number, and reporting confirmation number. Benefits of E-Tags    Immediate Reporting: Allows for immediate harvest reporting, regardless of cell service. Convenience: Eliminates the need to carry and attach physical tags to the animal. Law Enforcement Oversight: Helps facilitate greater law enforcement oversight through electronic records.
