<h3>RABIES&nbsp;</h3>
What is Rabies?&nbsp; Rabies is a viral disease that causes brain inflammation in humans and other mammals.&nbsp; It is spread through bites or scratches from infected animals.&nbsp; It can also be transmitted if the infected saliva comes into contact with your eyes, nose, or mouth.&nbsp; Once symptoms appear, the result is almost always death.&nbsp; Symptoms can appear 1 to 3 months after exposure.&nbsp;
Rabies Tips:
Observe all wild animals from a distance.&nbsp; A rabid animal may appear tame, but don't go near it.&nbsp;
Teach children to NEVER handle animals they don't know, even if they appear friendly.
Report ANY animal bite or possible Bat exposure to your local county public health department.
Wild animals should never be kept as pets.&nbsp; Do not try to pick up an injured or tame appearing animal if it does not belong to you.&nbsp; If you see any wild animal acting strangely - stay away from it and contact Animal Control.
If you have any questions, contact your public health office.

Signs: Fever, headache, partial paralysis, insomnia, anxiety, confusion, agitation, paranoia, terror, hallucinations and may have a fear of water.

There are approximately 4.5 million reported dog bites annually in the United States, nearly 2% of the American population.&nbsp; The majority of dog bites are never reported to local authorities.&nbsp; If bitten, contact your local public health office as soon as possible.

This Independence Day, Please be courteous when setting off fireworks, which may be upsetting for dogs and Military Veterans. Loud, unexpected noises, such as fireworks can remind combat veterans with PTSD of gunfire or explosions they had experienced on the battlefield. Consider your neighbors by not setting them off too late at night or close to their homes, or better yet, go to an organized event!
&nbsp;1 in 5 dogs go missing after being scared by fireworks. More Dogs go missing on the 4th of July than any other day of the year because the loud noises can scare even the bravest dog.

Registration open from May 20 to June 12, or until full. Open and free to all Ontario County residents. Please review the Rigid Plastics Recycling Guide for a list of accepted materials. The Oaks Corners Volunteer Fire Department is offering a "911" Address Sign Program as a public safety project for the community.&nbsp; They are offering highly visible, home address number signs with reflective color backing and 3" reflective white numbers on both sides of the sign.&nbsp; They are designed to be installed on a mailbox post for the greatest visibility from the street.&nbsp; The sign that you order will be either green or red, depending on what style of construction your house or building is.&nbsp; The different in sign color is to alert the responding firefighters of the kind of construction your house or building is comprised of; green for standard-construction building and red for lightweight construction such as site-built and factory-built engineered homes. These building materials burn faster and collapse faster than traditional wood-frame buildings, which can result in Firefighter injury or death.&nbsp; If you are unsure which sign is appropriate for your address, please contact the fire house and they will help you identify which type of construction you have.&nbsp;
The cost of the sign is $25.00.&nbsp; If you need a mounting post for the sign, they are available at an additional cost of $5.00.&nbsp; For residents living in a mobile home park, there is available a 12"W x 6"H white aluminum sign with your lot number in black for $20.00.&nbsp; The Fire Department will come to your address and install the sign for no additional charge.&nbsp;

Pay attention: Keep eyes on the road especially while traveling through work zones. Avoid distractions such as cell phones, eating, and conversations with passengers. Watch for signage indicating speed and lane changes as well as flaggers that may be directing travel.
Slow Down: Slow down while approaching a work zone. Lane closures and traffic pattern shifts are common in work zones. Follow the directions of the flagger.
Keep a safe distance: Rear end collisions account for many work zone accidents. Keep a safe distance between you and other cars, workers, and equipment. Expect the unexpected!
Plan Ahead: Stay up to date and check traffic reports before hitting the road. Leave early if you know you will have to travel through a work zone.&nbsp;
Be Patient: Road work and work zones can be inconvenient. Remember our crews are working to improve roads and make the roads safer.&nbsp;

Like most volunteer fire departments, the Oaks Corners Fire Department needs to bolster its ranks so it can continue to provide the optimum level of protection for its residents.&nbsp;</div>

<div>As part of RecruitNY Weekend, the Oaks Corners Fire Department will open its doors on Saturday, April 13 from 10am until 3pm. The department is located at 607 Cross Road in the town of Phelps. It will join hundreds of volunteer fire departments across New York to raise public awareness regarding the need for volunteers and to highlight the rewards of being a member of a volunteer fire department.&nbsp;</div>

<div>Throughout the day, the Oaks Corners Fire Department will conduct tours of the station and apparatus, allow visitors to try on gear, demonstrate firefighting activities, provide information, and address questions on becoming a member. These activities give visitors a taste of what it means to be in the fire service. Volunteer firefighters will also be on hand to discuss the requirements and rewards of joining. All are welcome and encouraged to attend, including families with children.</div>

In towns with a total population less than 20,000, you may burn tree limbs with attached leaves. The limbs must be less than 6 inches in diameter and 8 feet in length (also referred to as brush).&nbsp;However, this is not allowed from March 16 through May 14 due to the increased risk of wildfires. Burning loose leaves or leaf piles is illegal.
The practice of burning large piles of brush collected from local residents at town or county transfer sites is prohibited. The individual landowners in small towns may burn their brush on-site, as discussed above. Downed limbs and branches generated at a transfer site are also allowed to be burned on-site with the same restrictions. See&nbsp;<a href="https://govt.westlaw.com/nycrr/Document/I4e8f29f9cd1711dda432a117e6e0f345?viewType=FullText&amp;originationContext=documenttoc&amp;transitionType=CategoryPageItem&amp;contextData=(sc.Default)">Section 215.3</a>&nbsp;for a full list of exceptions.
Please note:&nbsp;While most firewood must be untreated, some firewood is heat treated (kiln dried) to control invasive insect species if it is to be transported over 50 miles. Heat treated firewood is not intended to be prohibited. However, the burning of chemically treated wood, such as pressure-treated lumber and plywood, is prohibited.

The clinic is for healthy animals at least 3 months old.&nbsp; Bring your most recent rabies certificate, if any.&nbsp;
Dogs must be leashed.&nbsp; Cats must be in carriers.&nbsp; One pet per carrier.&nbsp; No more than 4 pets per handler.&nbsp;

Rabies Prevention Clinic

The Town of Phelps was pleased to volunteer our services for the driveway extension project at the Phelps Historical Society in 2023.&nbsp;&nbsp;
This new extension allows for additional parking and the option to use the pass-through to access North Wayne Street.&nbsp; The extension makes for safer coming and goings to and from the Howe House Museum.

<h4 class="ql-align-center">FLCC will host a Veterans Day Ceremony on Friday, Nov. 10 from 1 to 2 p.m. in the main campus auditorium. The event is free and open to the public.</h4>
<h4 class="ql-align-center">Terrance Dominguez-Hover, president of the Student Veterans Organization, will be master of ceremonies. He was an Army specialist in the Fourth Infantry Division, Field Artillery and deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2016. The keynote speaker is Chief Petty Officer&nbsp;Leif HerrGesell, who joined the Navy Reserve in 2001 and began working as a Navy journalist.&nbsp;He deployed to Kandahar, Afghanistan in 2010 to serve as public affairs officer for a battalion of Navy civil engineers. A 1983 FLCC alumnus, he is currently the Canandaigua town historian.</h4>

The meeting will introduce Ontario County residents to their updated flood maps. People can search and review the preliminary Flood Insurance Study (FIS) report and Flood Insurance Rate Maps (FIRMs) for Ontario County here.
