Giant hogweed is a perennial herb with tuberous root stalks. It survives from one growing season to another by forming perennating buds and enduring a period of dormancy during the winter. It has just become one of an increasing number of New York States most striking, dangerous and invasive plants. You absolutely do not want to touch it and take it home to the family. It can make a case of poison Ivy seem like a mild itch.
